What you will need

Wig brushes

Although normal wide tooth combs are ok, wig brushes are designed especially for hair systems. They limit tangling, knots, breakage and general damage.

Wig shampoo and conditioner

Specially formulated wig shampoo and conditioner are best however any product should be phosphate and sulfate free. This protects color and increases life span.

Wig stand

It is important to keep your hair system in an upright position when drying. Wig stands also help keep wigs in shape.

Method

1. Brush wig

If you don’t brush your wig before washing, knots and tangles will become worse. The best way to brush is from hair tip to root. Make sure your hair system is well brushed before continuing.

2. Shampoo

Fill sink with lukewarm water. Unlike synthetic hair, it’s not good to submerge a natural hair system because it may cause tangling or matting nor should you agitate it under water for the same reason. After wetting the hair use a small amount of shampoo in your hand and evenly distribute from root to tip.

3. Rinse

If you don’t rinse your hair system properly it may become tangled. Use cold water and make sure the water flows from root to tip. This helps for smooth and silky hair with no tangles. Make sure all the soap is removed.

4. Condition

Use a small amount of shampoo in your hand and evenly distribute from root to tip. Gently massage into small sections of hair at a time. Rinse using the instructions described above. If you use a spray, do so from a distance of 10 inches.

5. Dry
6. Blot hair with a towel but do not wring. Place on hair stand to air dry out of direct sunlight. If you don’t have a hair stand you can use a hair spray can.
